EXCLUSIVE: 'I tried sushi cereal - it wasn't awful, but I couldn't stomach it every morning'

If asked to describe the taste of cereal, you will most likely imagine subtle wheaty textures, with maybe a bit of dried fruit or chocolate mixed in if you fancy a treat.

It's doubtful that additions such as tuna, olives, or turmeric will so much as cross your mind, with many of us preferring milder tastes before we've finished that all-important first cup of coffee.

However, Deliveroo has rolled out a limited-edition trio of inventively savoury breakfast cereals, each one celebrating a popular takeaway dish.

While stocks last, customers in London, Bristol, and Manchester can order a £1 box of ‘DeliverOO’s’, selecting from a choice of Sushi Roll, Margherita Pizza, and Chicken Katsu Curry.

We've given the bizarre range a go for ourselves - and this is what we thought.

I for one have had many a cold leftover pizza slice for breakfast in my time, so didn’t think this one would present too much of a challenge. However, I did hesitate a bit before pouring the milk into the bowl of tiny puff buckwheat kernels.

The tomatoey taste comes through quite strongly here - more so than the cheese - but certainly isn’t unpleasant, and there's also a subtle suggestion of basil oil which gives it a surreal rustic Italian feel.

Of course, it's quite weird to get the familiar taste of doughy, rippable pizza crust encased inside such light - and quickly quite mushy - grain, but this certainly makes for a fun novelty.

Out of the three, this undoubtedly tasted the most like the takeaway it was meant to represent, but I'm not sure I could stomach it every day, and I didn't end up finishing the bowl.

Chicken Katsu CurryCereal

Katsu curry is one of my all-time favourite takeaway dishes and I was seriously worried that trying a twisted version of it might spoil it for me a bit. I needn’t have feared.

I sampled a few of the crunchy maize flakes dry before tucking in properly, and can honestly say that I'd happily chow down this product like a bag of crisps. I enjoy anything spicy, and this has a little kick to it that - although not everyone's cup of tea at 8 am - tickled my taste buds nicely.

The curry powder comes through quite strongly here, but the milk pleasantly balances it out, bringing a nice cooling effect. This was my favourite out of the trio by quite a long way, and I found myself munching down spoonful after spoonful.

Sushi RollCereal

Now, admittedly this is the one I feared the most. Don’t get me wrong, I love sushi, but the very thought of mixing fish and rice up in a bowl of milk first thing in the morning - even in cereal form - just didn’t sit right with me.

I poured a few of the puffed brown rice kernels into the bowl and had a tentative nibble. The overall sushi flavouring came through much more vigorously than I thought it would, while a distinct note of wasabi took me by surprise.

There was also a strong gingery aftertaste. The brown rice texture went well with this, but it wasn’t screaming cereal to me. After stalling for a minute, I poured a glug of milk into the bowl and held my breath.

It was by no means awful, although perhaps not something I could regularly rush down before a morning commute. The milk didn’t compliment the cereal quite as well as it did with the Katsu one (wasabi and milk certainly make for a memorable combo) but it was undoubtedly an interesting addition to my breakfast and I was left impressed by the realistically fresh flavour.

Okay, so I don't think I'll be switching from my Crunchy Nut Cornflakes anytime soon, but this trio of cereals certainly made for one of the most adventurous breakfasts I've had in a while.

A Deliveroo spokesperson said: "When we heard it was World Cereal Day, we wanted to ‘bowl’ over cereal lovers with a breakfast dish to remember. We know our customers love to try weird and wonderful fusion dishes - which is why we’ve really milked it with this range of cereals.

"If you live in Manchester, Bristol or London, search ’DeliverOO’s’ in the app and for a bargain £1 a pack, you can take a break from cereal monogamy and try something deliciously different for breakfast this week."

If you fancy giving these unusual cereals a go, you can search ‘DeliverOO’s: Food Flavoured Cereal Shop’ on the Deliveroo app, or online to place an order. Subject to location and availability.
