Best supermarket mince pies named out of Tesco, M&S, Sainsbury

Mince pies from budget chain Iceland have beaten upmarket versions from Marks & Spencer in a Christmas taste test.

The cheap but chic Christmas treats costing £1.89 for six scored an impressive 75 out of 100 while the M&S box of six for £2.50 was awarded 73 by Which? magazine and consumer website.

Judges gave Iceland’s Luxury All Butter mince pies top marks for “their zesty taste” which they said “could be down to unusual extras such as yuzu juice and cider alongside the usual port, brandy and assorted vine fruits”.

The blind taste test of mince pies from seven supermarkets found Aldi and Sainsbury’s “did not live up to expectations”, the panel said.

Both scored the lowest points of 69 and Which? said Aldi’s Specially Selected mince pies for £1.49 “did not stand out from the crowd”.

Tesco and the Co-op shared the number one spot with Iceland and judges praised Tesco’s Finest for £2 for their pretty snowflake decoration dusted with icing sugar and “comforting” taste.

And the Co-op’s six Irresistible All Butter Luxury mince pies for £2 were found to be packed with “festive flair” and had a “tasty filling and pleasantly textured pastry”.

While Iceland, Tesco and the Co-op beat M&S Collection, judges said the most expensive on the list “did not disappoint when it came to flavour and texture”.

But they felt the festive staples had “a less enticing smell compared to their rivals”.

Lisa Barber, home products and services editor at Which? magazine, said: “For many of us, mince pies are the taste of Christmas. Our panel of enthusiasts have tasted pies from the biggest supermarkets in the UK to find out which ones will make the holiday season extra festive this year.

“Iceland has triumphed for the second year in a row but competition was tight between the top contenders in our blind tests, and there is a bigger than ever range of Best Buy pies at affordable prices this year.”
