A Michelin-starred restaurant is opening its doors to festive diners on Christmas Day - for the first time in 18 years.

For those looking for something a bit different on December 25, guests can enjoy a festive lunch with an Indian twist - and there will be no dishes to wash up after, either.

Now, curry might not be the traditional choice for Christmas day dining, but London’s Banares restaurant is set to put on three merry menus complete with poppadoms, dal and even lobster.

Executive chef, Sameer Taneja, is certain that people will enjoy a ‘sensational dining experience’ with their one-day-only tasting menus, each paired with 'expertly matched' wines.

The restaurant’s festive feast, served between noon and 4pm, is set to offer an intimate fine dining experience in upmarket Mayfair.

Each menu varies in price, from £75 per person, to their deluxe menu at £195 per head.

The most luxurious of which features a seven course lunch consisting of a glass of champagne and canapes, poppadoms, amuse bouche, gol gappe, tandoori lobster, followed by a main and rounded off with dessert - a choice of dark chocolate mousse or Christmas pudding, and petit fours.

Sameer Taneja, Executive Chef at Benares, said: "We’re so pleased to announce that Benares Mayfair will open on Christmas Day for the first time in 18 years. It’s been another difficult year for many and therefore it felt like the right decision to open our doors and invite guests to celebrate with us, in true Benares style.

"We’ve worked hard on an exclusive Christmas Day Tasting Menu to take diners on a gastronomic tour of India so they can sit back and relax whilst we take care of the cooking.

"Having regained our Michelin-star at the start of the year, we can’t wait to show guests what we’ve developed for Christmas for a truly memorable dining experience."

The restaurant regained their Michelin star earlier this year, praised for their confidence and good ingredients, as well as the restaurant's interesting decor.

Of Banares, the Michelin guide said: “A strong team of chefs, many of whom had previously worked here, were reassembled in 2020 to re-energise the kitchen and this they have achieved because the cooking now shows confidence, freshness and vitality.

“The star ingredient of each dish is of exemplary quality, whether that’s Scottish scallops or Kentish lamb, and the kitchen cleverly balances modern techniques with recognisable flavours and spicing.

“Once you’ve rocked the red carpet on the pavement outside, you’re greeted at the foot of the stairs before being escorted up past the flower-filled pool and busy bar into the cleverly textured restaurant – you won’t even notice the lack of windows. The private dining rooms and large bar lounge make it popular with the corporate market, but this is also somewhere to come for an intimate evening.”
