Woman shares paper towel trick for cutting onions that means you

The conundrum of how to stop our eyes from watering while chopping onions has long plagued home cooks everywhere, and it often feels like we're all doomed to suffer the sting of potent onion fumes as no one has found a solution that works flawlessly.

And while you might have tried some of the countless hacks out there to keep tears at bay, one woman on Facebook has shared another trick you may not have added to your repertoire yet.

Trina Michelle claims that you can forget all about wearing swimming goggles or holding wooden spoons in your mouth - as the best trick she's found simply involves a damp paper towel.

The woman said in her post that by placing a wet paper towel next to your chopping board while you get to work on your onions, the chemicals in the onion will gravitate toward the towel instead of your eyes.

She wrote: "Did you know the reason you ‘cry’ when you chop onions, is that the chemical in the onion is attracted to the nearest source of water (which is usually the eyes).

"If you place a wet paper towel next to your chopping board, the onion will gravitate towards that, and not your eyes.

"It really works! Give it a try!"

The woman's post received mixed reactions from people online - but many said the trick "helps so much" with making sure they don't leave the kitchen a sobbing mess when they're finished with their onions.

One person wrote: "Shut the front door! Definitely trying it."

While another said: "YES! Can confirm this helped soooo much."

And a third noted: "I love that no matter how old you are, you can still learn new things. Sure going to do this one! Thanks!"

However, some others claimed the trick didn't work for them, with one person saying the only way they've ever been able to stop themselves from crying is when they've been wearing contact lenses.

A few others also shared their own suggestions, including running the water in the sink for the duration of the chopping, and putting onions in the fridge before cutting.
