'Brits struggle to buy food as they pay price for Rishi Sunak's complacency'

Too many families in Britain are already struggling to put food on their tables.

This situation is only going to get worse because of rocketing inflation.

The price of basic food items is forecast to increase by as much as 12% this summer.

Some goods, such as milk, could be 30% higher. With fuel and energy prices also continuing to rise this will put a further strain on already stretched household budgets.

It will mean more children going hungry and more people turning to food banks for support.

The surge in food price inflation has been partly caused by the war in Ukraine. But the Government cannot hide behind the conflict as an excuse for its own failure to act.

It could have done more to guarantee supplies of grain, cooking oil and animal feed. It also could have done much more to help hard-hit families cope with the cost of living.

In his spring statement last month Rishi Sunak did the bare minimum to help. We are now paying the price for his complacency.

It is thought that much of this “blood gold” ends up in jewellery stores in Britain.

The primary responsibility for preventing this environmental disaster lies with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

The climate change-denying leader has failed to protect rainforests even though they are of vital to the world’s ecosystem. But British shoppers can do their bit by ensuring the jewellery they buy is ethically sourced.
