Aldi has been crowned the cheapest supermarket for the traditional Christmas dinner and trimmings.

It saw off rival Lidl with a basket totalling £28.17 for 10 essential items, a study by consumer watchdog Which? found.

A price comparison of eight leading supermarkets put Asda in second place and Tesco third.

Surprisingly, Lidl was fourth with £29.46, behind Tesco’s £28.88 basket and £28.49 at Asda.

Waitrose was the most expensive at £43.52 - more than £15 dearer than Aldi - for staples from the turkey and stuffing to veg, mince pies and Christmas pud.

According to the study, Tesco and Asda have closed the gap on the budget chains with pennies separating their bills from Aldi’s and both cheaper than Lidl.

Tesco and Asda were cheaper than the discounters for Christmas puds, matched them on the cost of 2kg of potatoes and their own label mince pies cost under £1 - more than 50% less than Lidl’s at £1.99.

And Tesco also matched the Aldi and Lidl price for 1kg of parsnips and carrots.

But when it came to the centrepiece, the discounters had the best value turkey crown at £12.99 compared £14.30 at Asda and £15 at Tesco.

Waitrose had the most expensive bird costing £22 with Morrisons and Sainsbury’s the second most expensive at £17.50.

Ele Clark, Which? retail editor, said: “Many households will be feeling the pinch this Christmas due to pressures on the cost of living, so it’s worth knowing that you can make significant savings depending on where you buy your festive food.

“While Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in our analysis, Asda, Tesco and Lidl were hot on its heels, meaning most people are likely to live reasonably close to a store where they could pick up their turkey and other festive essentials for under £30.”
