A new fish and chip shop has opened in Manchester, with a significant difference.
It isn’t any old takeaway, as all the food served is plant-based and vegan.
The Levenshulme business, JJ’s Vish and Chips, which opened its doors earlier this month, aims to be a plant-based offering for both vegans and meat eaters who want to try something new.
It offers vegan fish and chips, as well as vegan bratwurst, sausage and nuggets, so no-one has to feel left out when they’re looking for a takeaway.
JJ’s Vish and Chips began serving Manchester in February as a takeaway business, with plans to open a shop when the time was right.
Owner Jess Jones, 32, from Leeds, told our sister site 2Chill : “It was about two and a half, nearly three years ago now, I was at a fish and chip shop in Leeds, my hometown, and just wanted a takeaway.
“I was vegetarian at the time and realised I couldn’t get anything that was vegetarian and a chippy tea.
“There were all these sort of things that were coming out like vegan burgers and junk food you could get, but there didn’t seem to be any fish and chip shop replicas.”
With that in mind, Ms Jones decided to go out and create her own version of fish and chips that vegetarians and vegans could enjoy.

She said: “It was just a case of me feeling like I was missing out and I came up with this mad idea.”
Ms Jones uses banana blossom to make the vish which is then shaped into fish-shaped patties, marinated in fishy flavours, battered and fried.
It took a bit of experimentation to decide on this recipe, but Ms Jones was armed with some culinary knowledge when she first embarked on the venture.
Ms Jones said: “I worked in hospitality for many years and I’ve worked in kitchens, so I enjoy cooking a lot.
“So to come up with the recipe it was a mix of my knowledge from working in kitchens, trying things at home, reading online and trial and error really.”
Ms Jones opened her first shop in Leeds in 2019 and has received a lot of support from Mancunians since the opening of her new site.
She said: “The reaction has been brilliant, since opening our Manchester site it’s been absolutely mental.
“We’ve had lots of excited people in the shop and nice stuff online. It’s really nice and positive so far.”
Many people choose to eat plant-based food, claiming a vegan or vegetarian diet can help to protect the planet.
