A Londoner has tried his hand at making Salt Bae’s £1,450 golden Tomahawk steak at home, to reveal the real cost and difficulty of making the infamous dish.

TikTok and YouTube star Harrison Webb filmed his process for his followers, with the final result almost perfectly resembling the famous restauranteur’s pricey menu item.

Since Salt Bae's Nusr-Et restaurant opened in Knightsbridge earlier this month, social media has been recoiling at what many see as incredibly inflated prices.

Salt Bae's real name is Nusret Gökçe, a chef of Kurdish descent from Turkey. Nusret has started his own restaurant in London and has received mixed reviews since the grand opening.

M any have complained online that the steaks on offer are not worth the price. Someone on Twitter shared an eyewatering bill from the London restaurant, which came to £1,812.40, including £9 for a single Coca Cola and £11 for a Redbull.

According to the receipt a giant Tomahawk steak will set you back £630, a golden burger is £100, while a burrata is a comparably modest £25 and an onion flower costs £18.

Chief among the complaints is the golden tomahawk steak, complaints which prompted Harrison to see just how much it would cost for him to make it at home, My London reported.

So the YouTuber went shopping, picking up butter for £2, Thyme for 70p, and garlic for 60p to start things off.

Next, he went to get his steak from a local butcher, picking up a 1.4kg cote de boeuf, or tomahawk steak, for £32.92.

He then runs through the quickfire cooking process: "Salt it. Sear it. Baste it. Then finish off in the oven.

"Let it rest while you cover in it gold, I picked up two packs that came to £28."

This leaves the total cost of the shiny-looking steak at 'just' £64.22.

Whilst obviously this is far more than the average person will splash out on their evening meal, it's a whopping £1,385.78 less than the Nusr-Et version.

If there's one thing you can be sure of, it's that a saving that big will leave a very pleasant taste in your mouth.

Some TikTok users reacting in the comments weren't as convinced by the recreation.

One tried to argue that the quality of beef could not compare as Salt Bae uses Wagyu, "a fresh wagyu tomahawk from a butcher will set you back hundreds mate - that's what they use in the restaurant."

However, a quick google will show that even coveted Wagyu tomahawk steaks cost less than £150 online.

"Even when you include the cost of labour and all that good stuff, it's not worth £1500... maybe like idk less than £100 still". Another argued, supporting this point.
