Asda has announced the rollout of a vegan black pudding to hundreds of stores - but carnivores are not happy.
Black pudding is a type of blood sausage, traditionally made with pork or beef blood, pork fat or beef suet, and cereal-like oatmeal or barley groats.
The Bury Black Pudding Company, a firm specialising in vegetarian and vegan black pudding, makes a vegan alternative.
Their products will now be stocked on the shelves of more than 300 Asda stores in England and Wales.
The company makes black pudding vegan-friendly by swapping out blood and pork fat for vegetable fat and black beans.
Matthew McDermid, Brand and Marketing at the Bury Black Pudding Company, said: "We have seen the demand for our vegetarian and vegan black pudding increase significantly over the last 12-18 months.
"Given Asda’s keen focus on plant-based options, it made sense for us to approach them with our meat-free alternative."
However, a number of meat lovers have criticised the move that would help make traditional favourites more inclusive to vegetarians and vegans.
One person wrote: "Vegetarian black puds. Well I’ve heard it all now.
"They won’t eat meat but will eat stuff that tastes like meat, looks like meat, and has meat texture. I don’t get it. I’ll stick to proper black puds."
Another sarcastically said: "Is it April Fools Day?"
A third said: "Sorry, but this is in no way, shape or form Black Pudding", while a fourth added: "Why the f*** are we pandering to vegans all the time?"
Many were annoyed by the launch of "fake food" and left confused about trying to "reinvent meat products"
Asda and Bury Black Pudding Company have not yet said when the product will be available in stores.
In January this year, Asda trailed its first vegan butcher counter.
The partnership with vegan concept creator, Kbox Global, was trial a supermarket vegan butcher counter – Veelicious.
The counter was at the Watford store for six months and had a consistent vegan butcher offering - including facon, bean burgers, and meat-free meatballs.
With prices starting from 75p, Veelicious also served mock lamb and vegan ‘black pudding’, and a small selection of vegan cheeses, ready-to-eat meal kits and vegan staples, such as chutneys and base cooking sauces.
This year, Asda also added 22 new meat-free alternatives to its Plant Based range.
